Understanding Anxiety — And How Therapy Can Help
What is Anxiety?
Anxiety is a natural and often helpful response to stress or perceived danger. It’s our body’s way of preparing to respond to a threat, sometimes called the “fight-or-flight” response. However, when anxiety becomes persistent, overwhelming, or disconnected from actual danger, it can interfere with daily life — at work, in relationships, or in simply enjoying the present moment. Anxiety is a general term that can cover a variety of uncomfortable emotional states. We often think of it as feeling jittery or nervous but anxiety can look like anger, fear, isolation, or avoidance, just to name a few. Some people feel it physically in their bodies, like in their head, stomach or chest, for example. Others may feel in their some in their minds in the form of racing thoughts, playing situations over and over again in your mind, negative thinking, procrastination. Anxiety can include general worrying/over worrying, panic attacks, social anxiety phobias. Common signs of anxiety may include:
- Excessive worry or fear
- Restlessness or feeling on edge
- Trouble sleeping or concentrating
- Physical symptoms like rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, or stomach issues
- Avoidance of situations that trigger anxious thoughts
When Does Anxiety Become a Problem?
Everyone feels anxious from time to time, but anxiety becomes a concern when it’s intense, lasts for weeks or months, or begins to limit your ability to function or enjoy life. For some, anxiety is linked to specific triggers, such as social situations or phobias. For others, it can be more generalized or come on without a clear cause.
